The Big Island has two shooting ranges, the Hilo trap and skeet range, and a New Shooting Range Located just mauka of the 16-mile marker on Saddle Road.
The trap and skeet range is located just past the Hilo Rubbish Dump and is open Wednesday from noon-4pm and Saturday and Sunday from 9am-4pm.
Effective immediately, the DLNR board has voted to allow recreational target shooting at the range located just past the 16-mile marker on Saddle Road. It will be open for target shooting 7 days a week. You must posess a valid Hawaii hunting license (I didn't ask, but I would assume that all persons present must have a hunting license). If you don't have a hawaii hunting license, you must take the Hunter's ed class first at this website: https://dlnr.hawaii.gov/huntered/ . Your next step would be to get the actual hunting license online at https://hunting.ehawaii.gov/. The class is free and the hunting license is $20.
Do Not do any of the following at the range:
Use illegal firearms or ammunition
Drink or use drugs
Shoot exploding targets
Use incendiary or tracer rounds
Bring dogs or other animals to the range
You may shoot any caliber and may use any legal gun. There is no restriction against shooting .22 or any pistol calibers. These are the rules as we understand them. If you have any further questions, please contact DLNR.
It has taken a long time and a lot of effort on the part of many people to reach this point. Please be safe and don't do anything stupid that screws this opportunity up for the rest of us. Also, the 16-mile marker has always been littered with broken glass, old appliances, TVs, and other crap that gets left behind. I would recommend that EVERYONE who uses the range, take a 5-gallon home depot bucket or a trash bag EVERY TIME you shoot and do your part to clean up some of the miscellaneous trash, brass and steel casings, etc. that has been left behind by others. I'm sure DLNR police will appreciate our efforts to keep the place clean.
