Shipping firearms to Hawaii from out of state
If you are having a rifle or shotgun shipped to us from out of state, you must have a current long gun permit from the county of Hawaii. Do not wait for the rifle to get here before applying for a permit! It takes two weeks to get a permit, so plan accordingly. If this is your first time applying for a long gun permit please follow these instructions:
Acquire a money order or cashier check for $43.25 made out to Hawaii Criminal Justice Data Center, or HCJDC. Go to any Hawaii county police station firearm office. There, you will fill out the required paperwork, get fingerprinted and photographed, and be given a date that the permit should be ready. You must take with you, a drivers license or other state ID, and you must be a Hawaii resident to obtain a permit in hawaii. The fee of $43.25 is a new, one time fee as of January 2017. So if you have applied for a Hawaii County permit before and paid this fee, you don't need to pay again. Once your permit is ready, you may pick it up. Only call on the date your permit is scheduled to be issued. It will not be ready earlier than that date. Long gun permits are good for one year.
If you are having a pistol shipped to us, you must have a Hawaii Hunter's education certificate, or a Hawaii NRA pistol class certificate. The state does not recognize classes taken in another state. If this is your first time applying for a pistol permit, please follow these instructions:
Purchase a pistol. Obtain the make, model, barrel length, caliber, and serial number of the firearm. Go to any Hawaii County police department firearm office. There, you will fill out the required paperwork, get fingerprinted and photographed, and be given a date that the permit will be ready. You must take with you, a drivers license or other state ID, and you must be a Hawaii resident to obtain a permit in Hawaii. The fee of $43.25 is a one time fee. So if you have applied for a Hawaii County permit before, you don't need to pay again. Also, take your proof of handgun training(hunter's ed. or NRA pistol class) with you. Once your permit is ready, you may pick it up. Only call on the date your permit is scheduled to be issued. It will not be ready earlier than that date. Then you may pick up your pistol.
The main station in Hilo is open from 9am-3pm, monday through friday. They are located at 349 Kapiolani st.
In addition to the $20 transfer fee per firearm, we also charge $20 storage fee per month or part of a month after the first month the firearm is in our posession. Any firearms left in our posession for more than 1 year will become our property.

You must take with you, a drivers license or other state ID, and you must be a Hawaii resident to obtain a permit in Hawaii. Also, take your proof of handgun training(hunter's ed. or NRA pistol class) with you. Once your permit is ready, you may pick it up. Then you may pick up your pistol.
